This describes a pattern I have seen in earlier generations of women. They find meaning and agency by using a husband or son as their avatar. It usually does not go this well as it did for the Polks because the husband or son isn't as self-aware and a full partner. The interesting thing is how Ms. Polk so thoroughly mastered the art of being the power behind the throne. I believe it was because she had a very strong sense of self-assurance from her background and upbringing. She had enough to stand on her own if need be.

It is a shame we haven't fully shed this social farce today.

An intriguing essay. I find that it parallels the piece about her husband. She was wonderfully adept and successful in wielding her power. Yet she was somewhat undone by the decisions that she no-doubt helped her husband make.
