Thank you, Ms McBride, for a refreshing essay. ✍🏼 For many years, I had believed that Mrs Truman was a snob who looked down on President Truman, owing to my too ready deference to my brainiac friend's confident asertions. 🫣 Never have I been so happy -- and relieved -- to have been so wrong. 🥳

Brainiacs are always to be questioned!

I had intended to add this statement to the re-stack. "@SarahBrennan, 'Mum' and Mrs Truman remind me of each other."

I am so grateful to hear this story back to back with Harry Truman’s in pursuit presentation. I can’t imagine their conversations as he was contemplating the bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Heavy duty restoration of the White House then gives me hope now.

I also love the photo of Bass when she was 13 the depth and scope of this article are inspiring in so many ways

Thank you for this writing

Refreshing to learn of her dedication to preserving the White House

Nice essay. Her being so unlike Eleanor Roosevelt undoubtedly helped her popularity.

An enjoyable essay. Her quiet power was clearly formidable.

How very interesting- I knew nothing about her before! How dimly she would have viewed Trump’s desecration of the White House!

Thanks in particular to Bess Truman for saving the original White House.
